Whenever the emigrant has obtained from the government a location ticket, which is a sort of certificate that empowers him to take possession of the portion of land he has selected, he ought to commence operations immediately.
1927
The settler must clear five acres upon each hundred granted to him, open a road in front of his lot, and build a loghouse of certain dimensions. These settling duties, if performed within eighteen months after the location ticket has been issued entitle the emigrant to a deed from the Government which makes the lot his forever.

The first inspection of the lands of the Ottawa for purposes of settlement was made in 1783, and the first location tickets were issued in 1788.
